Watercolor Challenge: Cherries

This week, we’re celebrating the sweet, tart, and totally irresistible fruit – cherries! Whether you love painting their glossy skins, tangled stems, or the way they burst with color in a bowl—this fruit is a watercolor dream.  Why paint cherries?  Cherries are a great study in values and highlights—perfect for practicing shine and dimension.  Their simple shapes make them approachable for beginners, while their textures and translucency challenge seasoned artists.

Did you know? 

  • Cherries belong to the rose family
  • A single cherry tree can produce up to 7,000 cherries in a season
  • The word “cherry” comes from the Turkish town of Cerasus, where the fruit was first cultivated
  • Cherries are one of the few fruits that contain melatonin, which helps regulate sleep
