This week, we’re diving into negative painting — one of my favorite ways to slow down, look closely, and let the subject appear almost like magic. So what is negative painting? It’s painting everything around the object, instead of painting the object itself. You build the world around it — the shadows, the shapes, the spaces — and the subject begins to glow simply because you didn’t paint it. It’s like sculpting with watercolor.
Negative painting is wonderful practice for artists because:
- It teaches you to see shapes instead of “things”
- It strengthens your sense of edges, contrast, and composition
- It helps you slow down and paint with intention
- It encourages you to embrace layers, letting each wash reveal something new
- And honestly… it just feels a little magical.
Whether you paint leaves, flowers, cups, birds, or abstract shapes, try letting the unpainted space be the star this week.
