What is Negative Painting?  It is a painting technique that involves painting around a subject.

Deadline July 26, 2024 , 11:59 pm ET    

Here are the details:

  • Share a painting using the Negative Painting technique (see example below)
  • Sponsored by Rick Surowicz
  • Entries must be posted in the Facebook group: Watercolor – Beginners and Beyond
  • Include topic hashtag in your Facebook post:  #negativepainting
  • You may enter as often as you want
  • Open to all countries
  • Winner is chosen randomly
  • Deadline July 26, 2024, 11:59 pm ET (New York time)
  • Winner announced July 29, 2024
  • Mediums accepted:  watercolor, watercolor pencils, gouache, water soluble graphite, water soluble inks, and mixed media as long as it includes watercolor
  • If you also post your painting on Instagram, tag @watercolorbeginnersandbeyond.   You could be randomly chosen for a QoR watercolor sample dot card.

How to create a simple negative painting:

Paint a light background, let dry.

 

Draw some shapes with a pencil (could be geometric shapes, leaves, hearts, etc.)  Then paint the background around the shapes, let dry.

 

Draw more shapes, placing some behind the first shapes (this will give it more depth).  Paint the background around all the shapes, let dry.
