Painting cloth can seem intimidating. Here are some tips:
- Practice observation: Take time to observe real-life fabric and study how it behaves under different lighting conditions.
- Study the shapes: Break down the cloth into basic shapes. Identify the different folds, creases, and patterns.
- Observe the values: Pay attention to the light and shadow areas of the cloth. Determine the range of values from light to dark. Simplify these values to create a sense of depth and dimension.
- Use limited colors: Instead of trying to replicate every color and pattern on the cloth, try using a limited color palette. Focus on capturing the overall impression.
- Brushwork: Experiment with different brushwork techniques to create texture.
What is the prize?
- This week’s challenge is sponsored by Kristy Rice. She is one of the most joyful people I know. If you haven’t watched any of her YouTube tutorials, I encourage you to put that high on your priority watch list! She is simply joyful, and it comes through with her art. She is so encouraging: Kristy Rice YouTube channel.
- The prize for three random winners is a Collapsible Painter’s Pot
- Two separate wells for painting water, one for clean water and one for rinsing
- Compact and travel-friendly: designed with small art studios and travel in mind, the pot collapses to a mere 1/2 inch flat
- Stain-resistant and easy to clean: the pot is sealed for stain resistance, making cleanup a breeze
- Gentle brush care: the pot’s walls are designed with ridges that aid in gently releasing paint from your delicate paintbrushes
