Figures in Sunlight with Graham Berry, October 7 – 8, 9 – 11 am CT (2 sessions)

  • In this workshop I will teach you how to simplify scenes and take the fear out of painting people, to see things as simple shapes and eliminate unnecessary detail.
  • We will work with a limited palette and I will teach how to paint wet in wet, dry brush, and the importance of the water to pigment ratio.
  • At the end of the class you will have a completed painting and the confidence to put people in your own paintings.
  • My paintings are inspired by the effect of light and shadow on our environment, creating dynamic shapes and colours. I especially enjoy painting people going about their everyday lives, and I hope to inspire you to see future paintings everywhere you look.

The Monochromatic Portrait with Jason Michael Bentley, October 7 – 8, 1 – 3 pm CT

The Monochromatic Portrait with Jason Michael Bentley, also offered November 8 – 9, 6 – 8 pm CT

  • Single color paintings can be great practice for composition or subject studies, and pretty cool looking finished paintings on their own! They help free us from multicolor complexities to focus more on what we need to know about form.
  • In this workshop we will paint a portrait from the sketch provided using a color of your choice. (Link for drawing below. 9×6.5 inches) Please have ready before workshop) Recognizing value relationships over chroma will be emphasized, along with basic structure of the face and head.
  • This open and interactive course will spotlight the instructor’s palette, work surface, and reference in real time, so you can directly see exactly how he mixes and applies paint. The process will be step by step based with short demos so you can take time to follow along and ask questions all the way to the finished painting.

Watercolor – City Slickin’! with Jason Michael Bentley, October 22, 2023, 1 – 4 pm CT

Watercolor – City Slickin’! with Jason Michael Bentley, also offered November 15, 2023, 6 – 9 pm CT

  • Painting urban expanses can be exciting! But rigidity and building perspective can seem tight and intimidating, especially when confronted with a lot of information. The goal is to loosen up a bit and trade some detail for a sense of the organic, finding sharp edge and repetition only where they absolutely need to be. This gives illusion of building clusters without having to paint everything.
  • In this workshop we will paint from two images.
  • One that can be translated into a very loose, almost completely abstract mass of form to help train our eye to look past the detail.
  • For the second image, we will apply our earlier rehearsal to a final painting, building in more elements to create a convincing cityscape.
  • This open and interactive course will spotlight the instructor’s palette, work surface, and reference in real time, so you can directly see exactly how he mixes and applies paint.
  • The process will be step by step based with short demos so you can take time to follow along and ask questions all the way to the finished painting.

Watercolor Foundations – Essential Techniques with Jason Michael Bentley, November 18 – 19, 2023, 1 – 4 pm CT

  • The most important part about painting with watercolor is understanding the behavior of the pigment and surface.  In this online workshop, we will explore the watercolor fundamentals and techniques often forgotten or taken for granted, such as understanding the influences of gravity and environment on paint management, and the importance of good timing for varied effects.
  • This is an excellent course for beginners and experienced painters alike. This open and interactive course will spotlight the instructor’s palette, work surface, and reference in real time, so you can directly see exactly how he mixes and applies paint. The process will be step by step based with short demos so you can take time to follow along and ask questions all the way to the finished painting.
